2010 photo projects - Themes and subjects

Hello everyone.

After the first indications here, here and here, I'm done defining what I want to do in 2010 ! Yes !

I've had to simplify. I'm always full of ideas about things I'd like to shoot, but I painfully experienced in 2009 that time is a limited ressource. Useless then to expect to much and to end up disappointed, I'd better start focus now, and not only behind the viewfinder !!!

So ... Here's what's quite well defined.

• To start with there's the unassuming yet intensely personnal "The sky out of my window" set. I started it in 2008 with the polas in my previous flat. It went on in 2009, still with the polas, after we moved to the new place (that's what is on the picture ...). It's going on now with the Canon ... I deeply like this project for the idea that there's something bigger than us, that whatever happens, there's permanence in the ever changing aspect of the sky, that it will still be there tomorrow, and the day after tomorrow, and the day after above our heads. I find that both calming and comforting. I think I'll put every picture I take in my Flickr stream and will post here about the progress every ten pictures or so with a diaporama, as I did already.

• Then ... Since I joined Toni's "One hundred photos project", there's "Le goûter" set. Unfortunately, I don't have a "goûter" everyday, so it might take some time to reach the 100 photos, but whatever ... I having fun with this project !

• Something about bare walls. As I said, we moved in our flat a year ago. There's still some decluttering going on (I just can't wait to be finished with that !) and we'll be left with quite an amount of walls to cover. Even if I generally like to keep things simple, I also like to use pictures to give a mood and we've decided we'd like things to remind us of the sea side. We'll see how we organize that, first to go take the pictures and then to choose the right ones ... This could be a "before/after" ...
  

• It's also a bare wall but the project is different : I want to organize an inspiration wall in my dining room, in front of me when I'm at my computer. That's rather easy to do ...

• I did my first photo book a couple of years ago after a trip in Egypt. That was the time of "jurassic photo books" (understand : long and complicated ...). Things have changed and are much more easy now. I'd like to give it a new try, probably on Blurb. Subject ? Let's see ...
  

• ... I have a huge stock of digital holidays pictures taken in Ibiza, Shanghai, Tenerife, Lanzarote, Miami, ... Before digital, I used to seriously make albums but things have gone a bit out of the way for let's say the last five years ... I think it might be time to do something about that and give these good memories their right place. One or two photobooks could be a solution. And traditional paper albums an other. There's material anyway ...
  

• One other photo project I'd really like to start in 2010 is about my childhood memories in Paris. There are lots of places that remind me of a happy past and I'd like to take photos, may be make montages, may be also collect them in a photo book. I think I'll start with writing down some ideas which will allow winter to finish and the return of a better weather will be the right time to start shooting.

• Last (but not least ...), I'd like to make my own cards for next Christmas. Moo may be ... And may be also cards for other special occasions (birthdays, ...). We'll see about that.
  

What follows remains hazy, but it is also nice to leave some room for projects to take shape.

• I'd like to take pictures of how we finish decorate our home ... I often regretted after moving not to have more pictures of my old places. This time, I'm anticipating. I don't have great light in every room but things can be done. May be some B&W ...
  
• I'd also like to shoot more of our everyday life. I'm still not totally at ease with how I could do that, but I'll try different things to see what feels and looks good.
  
• I'd like to do something about Paris with the polas ... I took some great polas of Paris in 2008 and 2009. They shall guide me to identify what could turn into a nice project.
• I have to define how I will use the Fuji both with films and with slides for x process.
• And I need to organize how I will get to know the Mamiya better.
  

Finally there's another blog project going on that I hope to tell you more about very soon ...

OK, did I write I wanted to simplify ?! I'll try to be patient with myself in any case ;o)

Après les premières indications données là, là et là, j'ai enfin fini de faire mon programme photo pour l'année 2010 ! C'est bon ça !

Il a fallu que je simplifie les choses parce que j'ai toujours plein d'idées de projets photo que je voudrais mener à bien, mais l'année 2009 m'a déjà cruellement appris que le temps est une ressource limitée. Inutile donc de faire des plans sur la comète pour finalement finir déçue. Je me suis dit qu'il valait mieux commencer à faire des mises au point dès maintenant et sans attendre d'être derrière le viseur !!!

Alors ... Commençons par ce qui est à peu près bien défini ...

• Il y a ma discrète mais bien-aimée série "Le ciel par ma fenêtre". Je l'avais commencée en 2008 au pola dans notre ancien appartement. Je l'ai continuée en 2009 toujours au pola dans notre nouvel appartement (c'est ce qui est sur la photo ...). Maintenant je continue avec le Canon. Ce qui me plait le plus dans cette série c'est le sentiment de permanence, que je trouve à la fois apaisant et rassurant. Mon idée est de mettre toutes les photos dans mon Flickr et de faire un billet ici toutes les 10 photos avec un diaporama, comme je l'ai déjà fait d'ailleurs.

• Ensuite, étant donné que je me suis associée au projet de Toni "One hundred photos", me voici lancée dans la série "Le goûter" avec laquelle je m'amuse déjà beaucoup même si je ne prends pas de goûter tous les jours !

• Autre sujet : habiller nos murs. Comme je le disais, nous avons emménagé il y a un an. Il y a encore un peu de vidange/rangement en cours (et je brûle d'impatience d'en finir avec ça !!!), et on va se retrouver avec pas mal de surface murale à meubler. Dans ce domaine aussi j'aime bien les choses simples et zen, mais je trouve que quelques images permettent de créer une ambiance. Notre idée ce sont quelques belles lumières de bord de mer. A suivre ... Il va falloir aller prendre les photos ... Il y aura peut-être un "avant-après" ...

• Autre mur vide, mais un projet différent : me faire un mur d'inspiration dans ma salle à manger en face de moi quand je suis à mon ordinateur. C'est plutôt facile ça ...

• J'ai fait mon premier livre photo il y a quelques années après un voyage en Egypte. C'était encore l'époque "jurassique" des livres photo (comprendre "long et compliqué). C'est devenu beaucoup plus simple depuis, et il me tarde de réessayer, probablement avec Blurb. Une idée de sujet ? Voyons voir ...

• ... Justement, j'ai des photos numériques, souvenirs de voyages à ... Shanghai, Ténérife, Miami, Lanzarote, Ibiza, ... Avant de passer au numérique, je faisais avec beaucoup de sérieux mes albums photos, mais depuis ... on va dire cinq ans, les choses sont un peu allées de travers. Je pense que le moment est venu de renouer le fil, avec un ou deux livres photos d'une part et des albums traditionnels d'autre part. Ce n'est pas la matière qui manque de toutes façons ...

• Un autre projet que j'aimerais démarrer en 2010 concerne mes souvenirs d'enfance à Paris. Il y a pas mal d'endroits qui sont pour moi des bons souvenirs et que je voudrais prendre en photo, pour peut-être en faire des montages ou un livre photo. Je pense que je vais commencer par me mettre quelques notes par écrit, ce qui va laisser à l'hiver le temps de finir et le bon moment sera venu pour aller prendre les photos.

• Et pour finir, j'aimerais bien faire mes cartes de voeux pour l'année prochaine. Sans doute sur Moo ... Et peut-être aussi des cartes pour d'autres occasions (anniversaire, ...). A voir.

Ce qui suit est moins clair, mais je trouve ça plutôt bien que tout ne soit pas figé à l'avance. Les projets, faut que ça vive aussi.

• Je voudrais prendre plus de photos de notre maison et de notre déco. J'ai souvent regretté, après avoir déménagé, de ne pas avoir plus de souvenirs d'un endroit. Cette fois-ci, je prends les devants. Malheureusement, je n'ai pas une belle lumière dans toutes les pièces, mais je vais me débrouiller. Peut-être un peu de N&B !
• J'aimerais aussi prendre davantage de photos de notre vie quotidienne, mais je suis encore loin d'être à l'aise avec comment je pourrais m'y prendre. Je vais essayer différentes choses et on verra bien ce que ça donne.
• Je voudrais faire quelque chose sur Paris au polaroid. J'avais fait des choses sympas en 2008 et 2009. Je vais m'en inspirer pour avancer sur cette idée.
• Il faut que je m'organise pour faire de nouveau du film et des traitements croisés avec le Fuji.
• Et le Mamiya attend que je m'occupe de lui ...

Il y a aussi un projet en cours pour le blog dont j'espère vous parler bientôt.

Et c'est moi qui parlais de simplification ?! Je crois qu'il va falloir que je sois encore un peu patiente avec moi-même ;o)

Pendant que je m'en finis pas de mettre la dernière touche à ma liste de projets photo pour 2010 (ça arrive vite ...), j'en suis déjà à ma dixième photo de ciel par ma fenêtre.

Bon ... la série est encore récente, mais ça prend forme !

Sweet-salty

Because not all "goûters" are sweet, and because "mix-and-match" also works for food, here's an unusual kind of "four o'clock snack" : gorgonzola (the Italian cheese) mixed with cream on slices of fresh French stick with a little bit of blackberry jam for a summer touch ... Sooo good !

And now that we're on for that tasty trip together, would you tell me what your favorite "goûter" is ?

Parce que tous les goûters ne sont pas forcément sucrés, et parce que le "mix-and-match", ça fonctionne aussi dans l'assiette, en voici une version inattendue : un mélange de gorgonzola et de crème tartiné sur de la baguette fraiche, le tout accompagné d'une succulente confiture de cerise noire ... C'était délicieux !

Et maintenant qu'on est parti ensemble pour ce voyage des papilles ensemble, j'aimerais bien savoir ce que c'est votre goûter préféré ?!

"Le goûter" - A 100 photos project

Hello everyone.

As I once intended to lavishly write about (the idea of writing is always lavish to me ...), some projects are made, and some are found. And it even happens that some find you.
Out of smooth serendipity, it's exactly what happenned with this 100 photos project.
I had just finished my "Choco-sophia" post about "le goûter" when I clicked, and Amy's beautiful blog "Pretty life photography" appeared on the screen, and directly led me to Toni and her "One hundred photos".
So here I am, even before I'm finished with the "What" part of my "2010 photo projects", joining in with a "100 photogenic and tasty Parisian goûters" adventure.
To follow my preceding buttered slices of bread, today is a portion of "Galette des rois", which is a (let's quote the 1989 Robert & Collins again ...) "round flat cake made of puff pastry" and I would add with a thick yet melting layer of frangipane (almond paste) inside. You can check Tartelette for details, though she added some pistachio to the almond, which is not seriously regular, but must taste awfully good too.


Ready for the next 98 "goûters" ???

Il y a un poète (poète ? je ne suis plus sûr, mais quelqu'un qui écrivait en tous cas ...) anglais qui a écrit "Take care of the sound and the sense will take care of itself". Pour autant que j'adhère totalement à cette théorie, je suis obligée de constater que sa pratique peut être un obstacle à une sincère mais paresseuse tentative de redire la même chose dans une autre langue.
Comme j'ai tout joliment dit en anglais, je coupe dans les virages pour la version française, qui prend le chemin d'être aussi lourdaude que la version anglaise est aérienne. Ne risquons pas le crash ...
Je participe au projet initié par Toni et qui consiste à prendre 100 photos sur un thème que chacun se choisit, et le mien c'est "le goûter".
J'avais commencé avec mes tartines beurrées, et je continue avec une part de galette des rois accompagnée d'un verre de lait (ce que je n'ai pas dit dans la version anglaise ... Cette histoire est sans fin ...).
Tartelette a donné ici une belle recette de galette des rois pour laquelle elle a ajoutée de la pistache à la frangipane. Moins académique mais sûrement très très bon !

Et moi, je vous donne rendez-vous bientôt pour les 98 goûters suivants !

2010 photo projects - Tools and toys

OK, as hard as it may be, let's face reality: it IS the new year now, and time to think about projects.
2009 has been a productive year in the sense that I have finished exploring many things that I really wanted to ... explore. And I now better know where I stand in terms of equipment.
That's why I'll start with the "How" ...
After trying a lot of different cameras and techniques, I'm sure now about what feels comfortable and gives the best results.

• Digital: my Canon Eos 450D (and I definitely DO NOT need a bigger one! No way!) with the Sigma 30 mn 1.4 and the Canon 50 mn 1.8, and, on occasions, the Canon 24-105 mn 4;
• Film: mainly my beloved medium format Fuji 645 Zi;
• Instant: the Polaroid SLR 680 which remains my favorite by far, but I might sometimes also take the SX 70 for its milky colors.

On the "wish list" is the Canon 50 mn 1.4. For Spring may be, as a kind of celebration.
On the "to be worked out" is the Mamyia 6, that I still have to get more familiar with. It takes beautiful pictures but ... for some reasons ... I rarely take it, which doesnt' help as you can imagine. This year, the Mam has to find its place ... or not !
On the top of that, I've decided that 2010 should be the year to shoot more film and to give x-process a try. I have invested in some Ektar 100, a color negative that I've been wanting to try for quite long. I'll start x-process with Velvia, and will probably try other things yet to be defined. For both, the time is now.
For Polaroids, I still have films and they're no scarce commodity anymore.

So ... Now that I know what will be my tools, I can start thinking about the "what" ... I have many ideas that still need ... focus ?!

Donc, même si c'est affreusement difficile, regardons la réalité en face : la nouvelle année est vraiment là, et il est plus que temps de penser aux projets.
2009 a été une bonne année dans le sens où j'ai pu finir d'explorer différentes choses que je voulais ... explorer. Je sais mieux où j'en suis maintenant en terme d'équipement.
C'est pour ça que je commence par le "comment" ...
Après avoir essayé différents appareils et techniques, je sais avec quoi je suis à l'aise et ce qui donne les meilleurs résultats.

• Numérique : mon Canon Eos 450D (et non, je suis sûre que je n'en veux pas de plus gros !!!) avec mes objectifs Sigma 30 mn 1.4 et Canon 50 mn 1.8, et parfois le 24-105 mn 4 ;
• Argentique : mon moyen format Fuji 645 Zo bien aimé qui fait de si belles photos ;
• Instantané : principalement mon Polaroid SLR 680 qui est de loin mon préféré, et je garde le SX 70 sous la main pour ses rendus laiteux.

Pour ce qui est des achats complémentaires, je songe sérieusement au Canon 50 mn 1.4. Peut-être pour célébrer le retour du printemps.
Pour ce qui est des choses à terminer, il y a le Mamyia 6 qu'il faut que je finisse de prendre en main. Il fait de belles photos, mais je le prends rarement avec moi, ce qui ne fait guère avancer les choses n'est-ce pas ?! Cette année, j'ai décidé de faire le tour du sujet. Ou bien on devient copain, ou bien pas !
En plus de tout ça, j'ai aussi décidé que 2010 serait une année avec plus d'argentique et j'ai aussi l'intention de sérieusement m'essayer au traitement croisé. J'ai donc un bon petit stock d'Ektar 100, un négatif couleur que j'ai envie de tester depuis pas mal de temps, et je vais commencer la diapo avec de la Velvia 100 avant d'essayer d'autres choses sans doute. Pour les deux, c'est cette année que ça se passe.
Pour le Polaroid, j'ai encore un stock de films, et on ne risque plus d'en manquer maintenant.

Voilà ... Maintenant que j'ai une bonne idée des outils à disposition, je vais pouvoir penser au "quoi". J'ai déjà pas mal d'idées, mais qui ont encore besoin de ... mise au point !

Choco-sophia

Hello everyone.

I unsuccessfully leafed through my dictionary ...

I have a beloved ritual that, in French, is called "le goûter". The 1989 Robert & Collins turns it into "tea time" or "afterschool snack" but none fits, first because, since French people are not so much into tea (and especially not kids), it's definitely not about tea, and second, because the concept is much larger than school.

"Le goûter" is indeed the snack kids have when they come back from school in the afternoon, but having a "goûter" doesn't have to stop when you're a grown up and don't go to school anymore. I, for myself, keep having "goûters" on any possible occasion. I would translate it in "the four o'clock"... But, in fact, what is terribly missed in all English expressions lies in the word's root : "le goûter" comes from the French verb "goûter" which means in the same time "to taste" and "to enjoy". I hope that, knowing that, you better see what I mean ...

As shown on the photo, my favorite "goûter" includes a hot chocolate and grilled and salty-buttered slices of French "baguette".

And this is how dictionary disappointment trapped me into writing something perfectly useless ...

The point was that, "goûter" time, especially when I'm alone, allows untamed thoughts wandering. This afternoon, it brought back the content of a possible "Parismages - The story behind" I carefully wrote down some time ago only to better forget it and in which I related light to knowledge, knowledge to wisdom, wisdom to intuition, and intuition to photography. And all this directly led me to Susannah's post in which I found that quotation from Rev. Dr Martin Luther King:

"Knowledge is a process of piling up facts; wisdom lies in their simplification".

A sentence that will keep me thinking ... Thinking about life, and thinking about photography.

Anyone who said that no wisdom lied in hot chocolate has just been proved wrong ;o)

Paris all white

Hello everyone !

An unusual "all white" week end in Paris ... More snow is coming.

January can be such a dull month. A little change is quite nice. And so is this feeling that there are still seasons to be experienced.

C'est un week end tout blanc que nous avons à Paris. Il semble qu'il faille s'attendre à encore plus de neige dans les jours qui viennent.

Janvier est souvent un mois tellement creux, qu'un peu d'animation nous change les idées. Et ce n'est pas désagréable de sentir de nouveau le fil des saisons.

At home

Hello everyone.

So ... What's best to start a "Home" category than being sick, which definitely keeps you ... at home. I don't know exactly what's going on except that I feel sooo tired and sea-sick, and if you ask me what letter of the alphabet goes with this, I would say "s" like" sleeeeeeeep" ... zzz ....

On the picture is some fresh ginger root boiled and smothed with honey. I also rely on more serious medication, but far less photogenic ...

Quoi de mieux pour inaugurer une catégorie "Home" que d'être malade, ce qui vous cloue assurément ... à la maison ! Je ne sais pas exactement ce qui se passe, sauf que je suis trèèèès fatiguée et que la terre tourne de façon inhabituelle, et si je dois donner une lettre de l'alphabet pour décrire tout ça, je dirais "s", comme "sommeil profond" ... zzz ...

Sur la photo, c'est de la racine de gingembre frais bouillie et avec un peu de miel dedans pour adoucir le goût. J'ai d'autres remèdes plus académiques aussi, mais beaucoup moins photogéniques ...

Je reviens aussi vite que je peux ;o)

Smelling like snow

Watching the sky out of my window (and taking a picture !) always feels like perfect bliss. Today, it's hesitating between piercing blue and dark grey, and the air definitely smells like it could snow. We'll see how it turns out ...
